DRAGONS, DREAMS AND DARING DEEDS AND JOUST READ COME TO CPL THIS SUMMER
This summer knights are battling dragons! Wizards, castles and magic are everywhere—everywhere in the library that is. That can only mean that it’s time for the Cranbury Public Library’s SUMMER READING CLUB.
Created by Marilynn Mullen and Alicia Vincelette, this year’s Summer Reading Club is really different. You might even say that there are two Summer Reading Clubs this summer.
One, DRAGONS, DREAMS AND DARING DEEDS is for boys and girls from pre-school age through 5th Grade. These younger readers join either the Dragon or Knight team and vie to be the first to reach the Princess in the castle. The more they read the more their team advances. You’ll be able to see which team is in the lead at www.cranburypubliclibrary.org.
The second Summer Reading Club, JOUST READ is our club for students in grades 6 to 8 and we have planned activities just for them—like chess tournaments every Thursday afternoon at 3 PM! We’re also looking for 6th to 8th graders to help put on a MEDIEVAL FAIR for family and friends in August. We’ll need jousters, jesters, fortunetellers, actors and people to run fun games, crafts and refreshment tables. To be a part of the Medieval Fair, come to the planning meeting on July 6th from 2 to 4 pm or call Mrs. Mullen at the library (655-0555) and tell her you want to help put on the Fair. If she’s not in, leave your number and she’ll call you back.
As always, CPL has lots of special programs scheduled too! There are three major programs again this year.
On Monday, June 20th at 1:30 pm, we kick off the summer with the Youth Stages production of OZ
On Monday, July 11th at 1:30 pm, Sciencetelling, a big hit last summer, returns with DRAGONS AND DREAMS.
On Monday, July 25th, at 1:30 pm, Snakes-n-scales and Turtle Tales presents THERE BE DRAGONS!
All three programs take place in the Cranbury School’s Large Group Room.
Other programs include:
June 28th-Dragon Chalk Drawing from 11 am to noon for PreK & K; 2-3pm for grades 1-3 and 3-4 pm for grades 4- 8.
July 5th-Drawing Dragons from 11 am to Noon for 3rd to 5th graders and 2 to 3 pm for 6th to 8th graders.
July 19th-Origami from 11 am to noon 3rd to 5th graders; from 2 to 3 pm 6th to 8th graders.
July 20th-Learn to Make Lanyards
from 3-4 pm 3rd-5th graders.
July 26th-Dragon Masks from 10-11 am for First graders and 11-noon for grades 2-3.
July 26th-Dreamcatchers, from 1-3 pm, grades 4-8.
Cranbury residents including high school students and even two Cranbury School students are teaching all of the craft programs.
With a new Harry Potter book coming out on July 16, CPL has a series of programs leading up to the important event. We are showing all three films. The films are being shown at 1:30pm in the Cranbury School’s Large Group room.
Harry Potter on the Sorcerer’s Stone on Friday, June 24,
Harry Potter on the Chamber of Secrets on Friday, July 8th
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on July 15th.
July 15th we are Waiting for Harry. It’s All Harry-all day! In addition to showing the third H.P. movie and reading your favorite parts of Harry Potter books aloud all day we’ll be having games, puzzles, and trivia contests.
For our 6th-8th Grade students in JOUST READ, another highlight is a Knight’s Reading Vigil on Friday, July 22nd.
Our older readers come to the library at 11 am and read silently until 4 pm. Every hour on the hour there’s a 10-minute break when readers can get a snack in the Gambino Room, talk to friends and have a chance to win a prize. At 4 pm there is a Grand Prize drawing for whoever is still reading—two NJ NETS tickets for next season.
I hope you agree with me that this could be the best Cranbury Public Library Summer Reading Club ever. Thanks Marilynn!! Thanks Alicia! To check on any of the programs and activities of the Summer Reading Club, remember to go to our website www.cranburypubliclibrary.org. You’ll also find links to Summer Fun there such as Harry Potter Web pages and various reading lists including the Cranbury School list.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Lost your Summer Reading List? Not only are all the PHS reading lists on our website, we have all the PHS summer reading list books! We also have the latest novels, graphic novels, magazines, non-fiction, CDs and movies.
Are you wondering what you can do at the library this summer? We also need volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Club—to help children select books and play the SRC game, to assist with craft programs, play chess and to help organize and run the Medieval Fair. As a sophomore in September, you’ll need to perform community service hours. Your volunteering this summer can count toward your hours! In any case volunteering at your hometown public library looks great on college and job applications. To volunteer can Mrs. Mullen at the library 655-0555.

Our Preschool Story Hours
continue all summer!!
Monday at 10:30 AM with stories told by Julie Hardaker.
Thursday at 10:30 AM with stories told by Mr Z.
Story Hours are held in the Tom Gambino Meeting Room.
Of course, the Public Library’s PAJAMAS STORY HOUR continues all summer on the second Tuesday of every month. Bring the kids in their pj’s * to hear bedtime stories told by Mr. Z in the Library’s Meeting Room. The next three PJ story hours are: July 12th, August 9, and September 13. Stop in and get a flyer listing all the dates. * Of course, children can come to Pajamas Story Hour in their street clothes!
We’ve added new titles to our new EASY NON-FICTION section on the wall near Biographies. This collection was created for Pre-Schoolers to First Grade. The books were chosen because they are very easy to read and perfect for a parent and child to share. Some of subjects covered are months of the year, animals, science, good behavior skills—like sharing and honesty, trucks, jobs etc. Cranbury School teachers have been using some of the titles in their classrooms. Parents who have borrowed the books rave about the information and values explained. Check the area out the next time you come into the library.
PARENTS: ARE YOU PLANNING LONG CAR TRIPS
WITH YOUR CHILDREN???
We have purchased new children’s and young adult audio books to help shorten those long family car rides to your vacation spot. Try some of our Full Cast Audio books or listen to any of the Harry Potter books including the newest available on both cassettes and cds.
Have you read the Historical Cranbury Press online yet? If not, then go to the Cranbury Public Library's Website at www.cranburypubliclibrary.org and click on "Historical Cranbury Press". There you will find the first 40 years of the Cranbury Press indexed and available for full text searching.
Read the stories, quips and advertisements published at the turn of the 20th century. Don't forget to check out the other library links such as JerseyClicks too. JerseyClicks is a new statewide portal that features keyword and custom searching of 15 databases simultaneously! With your Cranbury library card and Internet access you can search full-text, magazines, journals and encyclopedias anywhere, anytime. These databases cover subjects such as health, history, business, education, science, current events, literature, and popular fiction.
Check out the new E X P A N D E D Magazine Area
All of the 20+ new magazines—covering a range of interests from the Home, Garden, Cooking, Computing,Travel, Nature, Finance, Business and, of course, for our High Schoolers have arrived!. Some of the new magazines are Family Handyman, Martha Stewart Kids, Museums New York, Real Simple, Shop Etc, Smart Computing, Smart Money, Time Out New York, Wine Spectator and Anime Insider.
And don’t forget the new Parenting Magazines rack in the Children’s Area and a number of parenting magazines new to CPL: Baby Talk, Child, Exceptional Parent, Family Fun, Parent and Child, Parents, Parenting and Working Mother. The current issue of each magazine, of course, does not circulate, but all back issues do.
In case you’re wondering who that new face behind the circulation desk is—it’s Robin Maggio, the newest member of the CPL Team. If Robin looks familiar, she was formerly a substitute teacher at the Cranbury School. Robin started at CPL on June 14 as a part-time Library Assistant and brings a strong background in Children’s books and French. So the next time you’re in the library, stop at the circ desk and say Hello or Bonjour to Robin and welcome her to the Cranbury Public Library.
