LIONS HAPPENINGS
Throughout the last "Lion Year", July through June, 2005, the Cranbury Lions have collected over 2000 pairs of eyeglasses, and quite a few hearing aids. We would like to thank everyone who has remembered to place their discarded eyeglasses and hearing aids in our "Big Yellow Box" outside the Library, and hope you continue to do so in the future.
As we leave Spring 2005, we remember and are thankful for the support we have received from the residents and businesses of Cranbury, and the surrounding areas, for making our Spring events so successful. This would include our Annual White Cane Drive, our 7th Annual Golf Outing, the Lions game booth at the Drug Free Fair, the Cranbury Lions Super 50/50, and the Memorial Day Parade – with a special thanks to Cranbury Township Director of Public Works, Tom Witt and his crew, the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Department and the Scout Band and Color Guard for their valuable assistance on Memorial Day.
Having mentioned the Super 50/50, the Lions would like to congratulate the three winners: Judson Hagerty, Sharon Dredger, and Larry Leson, all of Cranbury. We would also like to congratulate the winners of the Memorial Day Parade "Decorated Bike & Trike Contest" winners: Twins Megan and Morgan Mavoides (tie), Abbey Sekely, and Eleanor Whaley; and, the winner for the Best Float: the Cranbury Historical Society.
Each year the Cranbury Lions gives out four Student Awards based on merit and/or scholarship, and we would like to congratulate this year’s winners: Laurel Kanawyer for the Stan Thomas Community Service Award; Brooke Hansen for the Todd Beamer Scholarship; Laurel Kanawyer for the Dr. David Tudor Science Scholarship; and, the Awardee for travel to the World Affairs Seminar at the University of Wisconsin, Jane Venanzi.
The Lions have been working with the Township to restore the barns on the former Updike Property, and expect to be able to begin the restoration process this summer. This project will be updated in the next Township Newsletter.
And finally, to close out our year, a group of Cranbury Lion volunteers attended a Trenton Thunder Game and collected for the evening’s Thunder sponsored "Not-For-Profit Organization’s 50/50 Game", where we received the net proceeds of the evening’s 50/50.
As we approach a new "Lion Year", under the direction of a newly elected Board of Directors, led by President Alex Johnson, the Cranbury Lions hope that we will receive your continued support for our fundraising efforts, as well as the "non-fundraising" events that we sponsor for the benefit of the Town, such as our Annual picnic at the Cranbury Swim Club (July – for information, Contact Lion Joe Carroll) and the Annual Trenton Thunder Game (v. the Mets, Saturday, August 27; for tickets or information, contact Lion Bob Virgadamo).
In the coming months the Cranbury Lions will man their booth in the Food Court during Cranbury Day, serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and ice-cold soft drinks. And don’t forget to stop at the Lions Ice Cream cart before or after visiting the Lioness Flea Market Sale on Schoolhouse Lane. We will hold the Annual Children’s Halloween party in the "old gym" in the Cranbury School from 6PM to 7PM; prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served. And, of course, the renowned Cranbury Lions Pancake Breakfast – in it’s 63rd year – will be held in the Cranbury School cafeteria on Sunday, December 4, 2005.
The Lions’ Motto is: "We Serve". Once again, the Cranbury Lions Club would like to thank the residents and businesses of Cranbury for their support, without which, the services we provide would cease to exist.
