Cranbury Township

Environmental Commission

Current Objectives

The following goals have been established for the Cranbury Township Environmental Commission for 2008.

Environmental Resources Inventory – The Environmental Resources Inventory (ERI) was completed and presented to the Planning Board in 2006.  The ERI is available for downloading on the Township web-site and a copy is available at the Library.  We will promote the use of this tool to help ensure that all development is undertaken with sensitivity toward promoting a clean natural environment.

Cranbury Brook Preserve – The EC initiated the development of a management plan for the Cranbury Brook Preserve.  The NRCS will inspect the property in the spring and make further recommendations.  Signs will be posted at the site indicating the purpose of the project.

Stormwater Regulations – Members of the Environmental Commission continued to assist in Local Public Education Program through our Cranbury Day activities.  We will monitor and assist the implementation of the Township’s Stormwater Management Plan and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan as appropriate

Soil-Testing Program – The EC supported a soil-testing program in conjunction with the Rutgers Soil Testing Laboratory over the last 3 years.  Soil-testing kits were purchased and made available for free to township residents.  The test results enable homeowners to eliminate unnecessary application of fertilizers and lime on their lawns.  We have evaluated the results and have included them in the Township newsletter.  We will continue to promote the elimination of wasteful fertilizing and liming of lawns to raise consciousness and safeguard the environment.  .

Educational Activities – The EC will continue to provide and promote educational activities as follows:

  1. Documents and articles on the Township website
  2. Cranbury Day Booth
  3. Articles about EC activities in each of the Township's newsletters.
  4. Awareness of global warming, green energy and green building design.
  5. Being involved with the Cranbury School Science Fair by providing a prize on an energy related project.

Regulatory Activities – The EC will comment on proposed legislation that affects the environment, as appropriate.

Stormwater Mitigation – We will seek to identify mitigation projects to be implemented by developers in lieu of meeting requirements of the Stormwater regulations where appropriate.
