Cranbury Township

Environmental Commission

Current Objectives

Cranbury Brook Preserve Management Plan - The Environmental Commission is working with the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service to create a plan for managing and developing the Cranbury Brook Preserve.

Stream-Corridor Ordinance - The Environmental Commission believes a new ordinance is needed to fill gaps in existing ordinances/regulations that protect our streams from encroaching development and inappropriate uses. We are studying the ordinances of other townships to discover the best model for Cranbury.

Environmental Resources Inventory - The Environmental Commission has received a grant which allowed us to hire a consulting firm to develop an Environmental Resources Inventory for Cranbury. This database will be invaluable for evaluating proposals for development, to determine whether environmental resources are present in the area of proposed development, and to evaluate what protection should be applied to those resources. The ERI will also serve as a source of informational material for Cranbury residents, who will learn about the environmental resources in town, how they should be protected, and (for some of the resources) how they can be enjoyed for recreation.

Water Sampling – We have an ongoing program to test the quality of surface waters in our lake and streams. We currently have a grant from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to support water sampling in the Cedar Brook under wet-weather conditions.

Land Inventory
– The Environmental Commission would like to develop an inventory of Township-owned lands, with the ultimate objective of understanding and managing the natural resources on community properties.
